Hair Stylist Definiton:
"Hairstylist is a wonderful person that touches more hearts than hair"... My favorite definition of a hairstylist!
I'm sure many people have heard this, seen this, said this. What does it really mean?
After doing hair for an event to raise money for a great cause this weekend, this really stuck out in my mind.
So, I have to share my story.
Starting out as a new stylist in the early 1990's (yikes!), I was scared. I was afraid of clients and my co-workers. (Well, actually people in general.) But I was ready to make lots of money! I thought I learned everything I needed to know. I did just graduate from hair academy! Was I in for a wake up call? Yes. Yes, I was.
I remember my days assisting in my first real salon. I say real salon because this is the type of place I wanted work. Not a quickie $10.00 haircut place that sees a zillion people in a day just a quick chop and on to the next one. This salon was in a wealthy area with plenty of wealthy people. Only the best will do! All my mentor did was talk about how much money she made and I wouldn't believe it if she told me. She never really taught me anything except do as many people as I can and always tack on more $. So, thats's how it went for many years.
I did not like the person I became.
I started wondering is this what a hairstylists life is about? I was good at doing my job, but was I really? Something wasn't quite right. I needed a change so I quit and went on to further my education.
One day, while listening to the teacher, like a slap in the face, I knew that I wanted to be just like her! She listened when someone spoke. She helped when help was needed. She cared!
That's who I am. It's who I have always been. I LIKE TO GIVE!! I want to help! I care! It's not ALL about money. It's about making someone feel good about themselves and REALLY meaning it. Making a difference even if it's something small. Listening, REALLY listening to what, you, the client is saying to me. Everyone goes through something that isn't so great at some point in their lives. I care what happens to YOU and I will listen, cry, laugh, and hurt just as much as you do. Oh and of course, give you fabulous hair. Even if I'm all done with you you decide you want me to change it, I will change it. No charge...
I am a hairstylist. I am a colorist. I am good at my job. I am grateful for you & putting your trust in me.I am not better than you. I care about you and what you have to say. I will never let you leave feeling worse. I want you to be happy.
I touch hearts first, then hair.
